IoT and energy efficiency related technologies in buildings (Smart Homes)

This project belongs to: Technological innovation and intelligent systems

The IoT is a concept referring to the interconnection of everyday objects with the Internet, and that opens up new opportunities for companies as well as new challenges for citizens. This market is currently experiencing a boom, that is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years. It brings together the physical and the virtual world in order to create a highly customised and connected experience with a predictive frequency. This system uses sensors that can greatly vary in type, be electronic, mechanical, biological and that can allow access to real-time and detailed information of any process. Despite all of its potential, the IoT also deals with important problems, such as unified standards for devices, data protection and security.

While the reason behind the interest of large companies in boosting this market currently lies mainly in gaining a deeper understanding of the consumer habits of citizens in order to improve results and offer services, the incorporation of IoT-related technologies allows the acquisition of more in-depth knowledge of any process thus enabling improvements to be made. Therefore, this technology is applied within a very diverse range of fields, from the publicity to the industrial sector, touching on energy efficiency, health, energy, agriculture, city management (smart cities), etc.

Our work ranges from training and technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT), from a technical viewpoint. Above all, we have been focusing on anything that is more related with buildings and those who use them. The main objective of the project is to provide training support to vocational training teachers in the range of technologies and protocols related to Smart Homes in order to allow them to update their teaching content. We at Tknika are working in partnership with vocational training centres, universities and companies in the Basque Country for this send, in order to place ourselves in an advantageous position over the paradigm shift.

This project has been completed in July 2017. In this project 50 teachers from 36 different centers have been trained through the course “Turn your house into a Smart Home”.

In line with this project we have started to work on a new project related to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). More information HERE.
