Integration of 5G technologies in FPEuskadi and use of the cloud to improve application development

This project belongs to: Technological innovation and intelligent systems

In this project we will work on two key technologies for the digitization of society: Communications and cloud computing.

On the one hand, in the communications part, we will show the current situation about the 5G technology and its environment. Thanks to this technology, the density of connected devices will increase, coverage will improve, data transfer will be accelerated and latency will decrease. This will enable, for example, the development of the autonomous vehicle, always keeping safety in mind. In the area of medicine, it will facilitate the performance of remote surgical operations and, in the industrial world, there are great opportunities to improve and optimize production processes. Thus, one of the objectives of the project is to visualize the current situation and provide information on this emerging technology. To this end, it will be important to explain the advantages and risks, as well as the sectors where this technology can be applied.

On the other hand, in the area of digitization of companies, the decision is currently being made to take the infrastructure, platform, data… to the cloud. However, it is very important to define and be clear about which of the company’s services are going to be outsourced. Therefore, another important objective of our project is to clearly explain the services offered by the cloud, and the advantages and disadvantages of using these platforms. At the same time, the use of the cloud is also revolutionizing the way we building, developing and deploying services. This flexible and agile way of building applications helps new companies or startups to quickly position themselves in the market and, therefore, our goal is to learn and disseminate what interesting tools exist within the cloud native technologies.

Finally, all this knowledge will be transferred through webinars and courses in different formats, but always trying to seek the practical application of what has been learned. These training sessions will be aimed at teachers of vocational training in the fields of computer science, electronics, telecommunications and any other teacher who shows interest in the topics described.

In summary, the project objectives for the 2023-2024 academic year are:

Communications:

  • Organize informative webinars on new communication protocols: 5G, NB-IoT
  • Create a 5G in production laboratory in Tknika
  • Bring 5G SA technology to schools by creating an educational kit
  • Equip Euskelec vehicles with 5G on-board cameras

Cloud computing:

  • Extend the knowledge about Cloud Native technologies
  • Analyze and disseminate the use of generative AI in programming
  • Train VET teachers on Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) technologies: Terraform and Ansible
  • Manage and collaborate in the implementation of VDI systems in the VET schools
