Biotechnology Laboratories

This project belongs to: Biosciencies and sustainability

BIOTK laboratories have been launched during academic course 2019-2020. The following disciplines are developed in those laboratories: Agro-food, industrial and health biotechnology; Molecular Biology and Cell Biology.

Biosciences have become a relevant sector in the Basque Country thanks to its high R&D rates, the offer of employment and the international focus. It is one of the strategic priorities of the RIS3 Euskadi (Regional Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization) that has been detected to support the diversification of the economy. Although the main activity regarding this strategy of the Biosciences concentrates on the health sector, including ageing, it is remarkable that, during the last years, the Biotechnology is growing exponentially.

Furthermore, the RIS3 has identified the food and agro-food industry as niches of opportunity or social challenges that must be solved trhough knowledge.

For the purpose that Vocational Training aligns with these strategies, BIOTk laboratories where Biotechnology is a cross-cutting discipline are set up in Tknika. In these laboratories, the following fields are developed:

  • Agro-food and industrial laboratory

In the agro-food industry’s domain, research and trials including sustainable agro-food circular economy, nutritional analysis, food safety and traceability of food, etc. are made.

In the industrial field, research and trials regarding soil and water, biofermentation, bioremedation and the improvement of the environment are made.

  • Cell biology laboratory

In order to reach aseptic conditions, a cultivating room provided with laminar flow cabines and CO2 incubator, etc. has been installed. In that way different kind of cell cultures, celular therapy studies, etc. can be carried out.

Within this laboratory 3D bioprinting stands out as one of the innovative techniques from the technological and biological point of view.

  • Molecular biology laboratory

In this domain, research and trials using removal techniques and quantification of proteins, DNA extraction, qPCR, immunology, etc. are made.

ACTIONS DEVELOPED BY THE BIOTK LABORATORY

  • Courses:
“Theoretical and practical course of quantitative PCR: Foundations and Applications” 2020-2021

“Introduction to cell culture techniques” 2019-2020, 2020-2021

  • Designing of face masks
